MADE BY HAND EPISODE #1: HOLLIE MARTIN

YAY! So apart from cringing at the sound of my own voice, I'm so proud to bring you my very first radio show in podcast form. Last Saturday I had the pleasure of interviewing the very talented artist and jewellery maker Hollie Martin as my first ever guest. She is a true diamond, and I think you'll enjoy this little chat we had about her work and creative practices.

STRAND HATTERS X ME

The boys at the Strand Hatters commissioned me to create a special window display for Wool Week. I was also asked to customise two beautiful and unique Akubra hats and cover a bunch of other hats in bespoke pom poms. Can I just say, more men should wear pom poms in my opinion, on their lapels and on their hats, such a good look! Anyway, this project was especially exciting because for starters I love Strand Hatters! It's the only shop of its kind in Sydney selling classic hats and accessories for men; it's run by a team of dapper gents who are all absolute mega babes; and apparently Mick Fleetwood shops there when he's in town. What's not to love?!

The shop is in the Strand Arcade, and the window commission is part of a special Wool Week celebration also featuring none other than the queen of yarn bombing, Magda Sayeg, who knitted up cosies for two huge trees inside the arcade for the occasion. Pop down over the next week to see my windows, and Magda's trees! I snapped some phone photos during the install. Nicer ones to come soon. Thanks Strand Hatters for having me!

I HAVE A RADIO SHOW!

So, I will very soon be venturing into the wonderful world of community radio and hosting my first ever radio show this Saturday at 10am on 2SER FM! I a mix of super excited and insanely scared, but all in all I think it's going to be pretty fun! My show is called Made By Hand and it's all about profiling local creative gems who are making stuff by hand. Each week you'll be treated to a roll call of inspiring designers from Sydney (and sometimes abroad), insights into what it's like to do what they do, songs they can't stop listening to, their top tips on how to succeed with your handmade ventures, and more! If you aren't in Sydney you can stream the show live online at 2ser.com, or come back here and listen to the podcast I'll posting of the show each week.

For the first show I'll be interviewing the amazing Hollie Martin, artist and jewellery maker, which I am so excited about. If you have any suggestions of people you'd like to see featured on my show, let me know! I look forward to sharing the stories of these amazing people with you!

WOOL WEEK

This week is Wool Week here in Australia. I've been working on a pretty exciting collaboration for it which I'll be sharing a bit later this week but until then, what better way to celebrate than with this bloody brilliant mini doco from Vice about Koos van den Akker, the guy who created the Bill Cosby sweaters!

FUN WITH THE DESIGN KIDS

I've written about my good mates The Design Kids before but here they are again with another amazing project that supports young designers. As part of their epic Australia-wide road trip (and to celebrate their third birthday) they're putting on Threesome, a treasure-hunt style exhibition in Sydney. A design studio, a graduate and a student collaborate together as a team to create a typographical piece to include in the treasure hunt. I'm taking part as one of the studios and I simply can't wait for the project to begin! I'll be updating you all with our team's progress as we create and execute our project. It's going to be very rewarding and fun! If you're a graduate or a student and you want to be part of this exhibition, check out their blog.

PARTY PROPS FOR THE LOOP

The Loop is an amazing resource for the creative industry that lists jobs, workshops and creative spaces around Australia. I recently made a batch of fun photobooth props for their site relaunch party and we all had heaps of fun putting everything on and getting our photos taken!
